Diploma of Medical Imaging (DMI)

The DMI programme is created with the objective of providing well-rounded education in medical imaging. The programme covers both Radiography and Sonography in their 3 years of study. Graduates from the programme can gain entry into renowned hospitals as a Radiographer cum Sonographer. They can even opt to continue their studies overseas in the medical imaging field, specializing in either Radiography or Sonography. Graduates can continue their studies too in Vision College with the one year Postgraduate Diploma in Medical UltraSonography (Asia) programme.

Medical Imaging is a branch of health care delivery that utilizes x-rays and other energy forms to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. The three (3) year Diploma program is ideal for those interested in both personal interaction and a "high-tech" career in health science. Student reading in the Medical Imaging program will build on a working knowledge of biology, computer science, human anatomy and physiology, while mastering essential radiologic imaging techniques, safety precautions, patient positioning procedures, and patient care skills.

Through a mixture of classroom environment at the university and clinical education at a variety of clinical education settings, students acquire the knowledge and skills to achieve professional competence needed to operate medical imaging apparatus which may include general radiography, fluoroscopy, mammography, CT, MRI and ultrasound.Throughout the three (3) year diploma program students will be equip with critical thinking, communication, and problem solving skills and gain a diverse insight into the medical imaging field from the experiences gained from the learning process and those shared by your classmates. Student will award Diploma in Medical Imaging upon the successfully completing the program.

Career Prospect

Upon completion of the program successfully, you will award the Diploma in Medical Imaging and have acquired the skills necessary to work as a radiologic technologist and begin your career in the dynamic, cutting-edge field of medical imaging.
Medical Imaging technologists are in demand, not only in hospitals, but in imaging centers, clinics, private medical offices, medical and dental laboratories, and even mobile x-ray providers. They provide quality patient care while creating diagnostic images independently, assisting radiologists and other physicians in imaging the body, and operating specialized radiographic equipment.

Programme Description

The DMI syllabus consists of six semesters with 29 core subjects and 2 elective subjects, 31 subjects in total. Throughout the whole programmes students are to achieve a total of 105 credit points to graduate. DHS is awarded upon completing the three years programmes of the full time structured schedule. All areas provide a strong foundation for progression into research degrees and careers.

SUMMARY OF THE SUBJECTS
Principles of the Public Health, Ethics & Law
Students are introduced to factors associated with the psychological, social, economic, cultural and political that contributes to the current healthcare issues. Organized selection of scientific and literature of health sciences, government policies and reports, scholarly articles, and court cases on public health law, ethics, and human rights will be conveyed in this course. A wide range of ethics related courses are offered such as Public Health, Law & Ethics, Intellectual Preparation & Moral Leadership for the students to better understand the working environment and the ethical issues that they’ll be facing. Also, they are taught about patient care to help with the understanding on how to attend to a patient’s needs during their working years ahead.

Human Studies
Students are exposed to studying of the human anatomy to have a basic knowledge of basic scientific facts and principles underlying normal body structure and function. They will then be able to describe why the study of anatomy and physiology is important to the health sciences related industry.
Clinical Assessments & Practices
Clinical assessments are meant to boost up student-patient contact and to see how good students are with patient interaction. Students will be trained on how to select the right equipment to ensure the quality of images being obtained. The clinical assessments and practices are to help the students fully understand, interpret and evaluate images that are obtained through Radiography. They will also learn how to improve on their image obtaining skills and interpretation skills.
Medical Imaging
Principles Radiographic, Radiation Biology and protection, Radiographic Pathology are some of the radiographic subjects that the students will be exposed to during their studies here. They will also be exposed to the ultrasound modality with courses such as Ultrasound of the abdomen and physics of ultrasound. Students will have discussion on diseases and pathologies that occurs in the body and how does the images appear on medical modalities. They will be well prepared on the different medical imaging modalities used at the end of the programme.
Scientific Health Writing Techniques
Conveying the ever changing and expanding world of science through books, journals, researches and media is essential. Therefore generating good writing skills in a student is vital. Students will develop writing skills to academic audiences by analyzing, interpreting, researching, synthesizing and evaluating a wide variety of sources throughout these courses. College Writing and Medical Writing syllabus will definitely build up creative and informative writing skills for science, medicine and health related fields in students.
